Demo - Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices.

posted Sep 11, 2012 02:25:44 by FlynnLeek
Hey there! Trying to get Artemis to run on my aging Dell Inspiron (remember those exploding batteries?).
I try to run the demo and I get 'Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices.'
It's currently running Windows 2000, and has Directx 9 on it. It's reporting that Direct3D is enabled, and all the tests pass. Card is an ATI Rage Mobility 128, 8mb.

Aha.. there's the problem...

It turns out that my card has a compatability issue with DirectX 9.0c... and rolling back to 9.0b is gonna be a pain in the patoot...

As predicted, a pain in the patoot. But, mission accomplished.

Unfortunately, it's not enough. Artemis will not run on 9.0b.

Le Sigh.

So yes: If you have an ATI Rage Mobility 128 - and ONLY that card - you aren't going to be able to play Artemis.

I can confirm a Dell Latitude D505 has the same error with an Intel GME 82852/82855 video card.

A Latitude D810 with a Radeon X300 will work though. It's nearly the same generation as the explodable Inspiron.

Yep. I was disappointed to find out that one of my old laptops couldn't run Artemis as well. Down-right *shocked*, considering DirectX 9c was released back in 2004! (That laptop must be older than I realized!)

I think anything with at least an Intel GMA 900 series chipset should work. That's the lowest end box I've had success with.

This thread might help - I got my old HP Pavillion ZV5000 to work with the 3D Analyzer that JSpaced recommended. I don't know if it is the same hardware shader issue that my laptop was having, but if you're looking for a client laptop as opposed to a server, then this might help.

Also....
HP G6000
