Warp Factor F- Wait! Less Power! Argh!

posted May 05, 2012 00:11:59 by dhmholley
Played a few games tonight with a bunch of new players - only myself at helm and weapons had flown before, so it was an interesting experience. It was our first time trying out 1.65 as well, though unfortunately before the 1.65.1 patch.

Highlights included:

Running like little girls away from the very first drone we saw, while having everyone scream "shoot it down! shoot it down!" and panicking. Then, finally shooting it down only to have another one launched at us. They probably aren't really that scary, but it was funny anyway.

Similar panic at seeing our first fighter ships launched at us, then relief when it turned out that the nuke that had been in mid-flight detonated and destroyed them all before they could do anything.

Sitting in a dreadnought in front of a Kralian cruiser for a while and wondering why it wasn't dead yet, until someone noticed that we'd not actually targeted it. Then, "Oh." *boom* "That's why."

Space whales yay! Though unfortunately we're still none-the-wiser about what they actually do, if anything.

Weaving at Warp 4+ through an asteroid field due to the engineer ramping up power unexpectedly.

The only downsides were the frequent crashes to the desktop halfway through a game. :( Hopefully the new version will fix that, though.

---

And a bonus anecdote, from a previous game:
"Helm, jump to those co-ordinates when our energy is at full."
"Jump engaged. Jumping in 9. 5. 3. 2. 1. Jumping."
"..."
"Um."
"Helm, did you forget to take the parking brake off?"
"..."
*Undocks*
"Jumping in 9..."

Great story. Love the punch line!
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

Haha great stuff. Sounds like something that could happen with a ragtag crew in firefly or iron sky :D
