Artemis Universe

posted May 16, 2012 04:29:46 by Morganstern
Ok, story time then crazy idea time:

I see a lot of individual crews having their own adventures, but I don't see anything uniting these crews in a cohesive universe (other that posting the stories on this forum). It reminded me of another game, Warhammer 40k, where you would go and fight your individual battles but there was only this nebulous link to the greater overarching storyline. However, every summer they used to have a big campaign where your battles would count towards objective for your faction, and there was this online map where neat things would happen if you and your allies won enough games. It was substantially cool.

Here enters the crazy idea. What if I were to make such a site for Artemis? Individual crews could register their ships, then go on the missions from the site. Afterwards they would document their mission outcome, thereby effecting an overall campaign. Then after a certain period of time the campaign would end and the points would get tallied, then a new campaign would start based on the outcome of the last and along the way we could create this whole big fleet and a universe of interacting stories.

To add variety, crews could register their ships with a specific specialty. There could be combat ships and exploration ships, as well as medical and scout vessels. There would be missions for all classes of ships, but there would also be special missions for each of the specialties to let them do cool stuff along their chosen lines.

It's still really in the planning stages, but I wanted to take a sounding from the community before I went crazy with it. So, what do you think?

That's a very interesting idea.

Assuming you want plot, would this require custom sets of missions to be written? Or would you figure out some way to incorporate Invasion mode games into the metaplot? Custom missions might be very time-intensive to create.

You might also want to incorporate some method of arranging or incorporating PvP games, as I'm sure there'd be lots of crews interested in that if the matchmaking were good enough.

If you're after any plot writing help then I'm sure you'd get a lot of volunteers (I'd be happy, for one).

I think this could be a really fun idea.

So you could create a campaign of missions where people report their success/failure and depending on the results for a particular mission, that would affect the initial conditions of the next mission.

The missions could be based around various areas of the galaxy.

For matchmaking, someone could develop a website/service/system where people register their crew and it matches them up to some other crew, and after the game both teams report their result. It could run on the honour system or perhaps if there is a dispute then the result is disregarded entirely.

That could then decide which mission should come next.

Right now the idea is to have a couple of generic missions, such as security detail or system scanning and a couple of specialty specific missions like escort duty for combat or plague outbreak for medical. (I do have an idea on how to make these missions more dynamic than running the same thing over and over, but I'm still trying to work out if it's possible.) Then, once you contribute enough points to the overall total you'll receive access to the storyline missions, which would be big important things that can have a greater impact current events and let crews discover information on the campaign.

As far as PvP and matchmaking, I imagined it to be co-op more than anything else. Everyone would be on the same side and all contributing to the same objectives, so it would mainly be player crews vs. npc bad guys. If people wanted to get more into competing with other crews past a friendly Who's Top Contributor way, it could be addressed later.

Aside from the "How would this actually work?" question I think this is great idea :D It would make artemis less of a simulator and more of a game with objectives! You've got my support!

I'll elaborate a bit more:

The site will have an objective (or more likely objectives) that the entire fleet will work towards together. When you want to take a mission, you go and download one from your crew's section of the site and run it. Afterwards, you go back onto the site and report what happened. The site will generate a point total based on how well you did and add those points to the overall objective pool. When an objective has enough points, it completes and something happens (most likely some kind of important mission becomes available). Then another objective goes up and the process repeats.

I'm hoping the heart of this whole thing will be a random mission generator, something that can build .xml files from a database of mission elements. That way you won't be stuck running the exact same mission multiple times.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I want to set this outside the greater Artemis universe. It'll give me more room to write without having to worry about accidentally rewriting Krailen history. Plus, I get to make a full conversion mod!

More news as it develops.

I have an unused prototype for a site that could be a jumping point for a portal to the expanded universe stuff... (http://vayl.net/3d/) I'd be interested in possibly helping...

This is very similar to an idea I had, but more fleshed out. I like it.

I've been working on something very much like this on my site, but there's nothing on the front end to see (yet). I've gotten a fair amount of the data modeling done, though. The level of resolution tracks individual crewmen, following their successes and failures, etc, and ties them bridge instance (basically, a collection of individuals on a bridge, but it also holds information like what faction they're representing and so forth (think of it as the Artemis equivalent of a softball team). Those, in turn, are associated to a session, which contains what bridges are involved in a given mission, what mission is being played, when it started, ended, and who won or lost. This will eventually plug into a larger league system that will track successful outcomes and attribute them to a given faction, with the idea of a point system that can track overall victories by faction and/or bridge.

My thought is to use modified versions of missions to add easily parsed tags to the mission log so individual achievements and outcomes could be read fairly easily by the system.

It's a bit complicated, but I'm working on it.

I am in! This is exactly the kind of game concept I've been searching for. I played Star Wars Galaxies, Star Trek Online, and Eve Online, all hoping to get this kind of experience up and running! If you need any assistance writing or even with artwork, I will do my best to help get this off the ground!

So have there been any updates on this topic? I am very interested in this style of game play.

We could structure this type of play based on a "Living Artemis" concept. I'm going with an idea akin to "Living Greyhawk". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Greyhawk I'm calling it "Artemis Universe" and cause that sounds cooler, and the name of the thread.

Here's a few things that might be useful in setting this up:

People Matter!
A ship is only as good as its crew. So I'm suggesting that as people play missions, they can accumulate stats, awards, or other notoriety. We can track this and tailor missions based on experience. We go easy on the newer players to get them hooked, and ramp up the challenge for the experienced ones.

Sector vs Quadrant
This is trying to lay some terms down,
1) A Quadrant is a map created for Artemis.
2) A Sector is a collection of Quadrants (in Game Play)
3) A Sector will also refer to areas where Artemis players (In the Real World)

So People on USA west coast would face a similar threats from a particular faction, On the other hand, the East Coast Ships are faced with different problems of their own. Until we have an idea where people are, I suggest using Latitude and Longitude to start. Here's a good URL to help people find this info: http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html

Different Mission Classes
Introduction:
Written missions for new players. Expect these missions to be used at events.
Training:
Training Missions of all types, For Example, The Kobayashi Maru is Captain training.
Universe:
Written Missions for any crew anywhere.
Sector:
Written Missions for crews in certain sectors (not many written here at first)
One Shot & Special:
One Shot Missions for Special Events (GenCon, PAX, ect)
Generated:
Someone suggested that a mission generator is written. I like that idea, so here's a whole category of missions from this tool.

Here's are some of my ideas on this... What do people think?

add to Mission Classes, Ship Specific missions. Missions for the different sizes and classes of ships.
