Ouya Android console?

posted Mar 21, 2013 16:04:28 by TaigiaReilly
So I just found out about a new console coming out that runs Android OS and my mind went to Artemis. With the new official Android version coming out soon will it be possible that this console could be used to run our favorite game? I kind of hope so.
I have to drag my desktop to LAN parties because I don't have a laptop. If this Ouya will be able to play the Android version of Artemis then I'll have something I use as my Artemis box?

It is for this same reason that I was looking forward to the steam box. If you need any information I am putting in a link to the wikipedia entry.

Heya, I think I can answer your question to a degree. The Ouya runs on a Tegra3, not the fastest horse in the stable anymore, but definitely capable enough for Artemis.

I tested the android client on a number of low-spec devices, heck even the JXD7300 and the MK808 HDMI Stick play this game on 1080p. The game has a smooth framerate even on older dualcore android devices. Heck, you can run the server on these things too, how awesome is that?

I'd say that unless they fudge up seriously on the Ouya, you'll probably have a good time with Artemis on it. We'll only know for sure once we test it on it though! If you want an Artemis box RIGHT NOW, you can get a $70 dual-core Android Stick and play Artemis on that (once the client is released). It works fine and the android stick is a lot smaller than Ouya too! ^^

And eugh, Steam box. Yes it's small but really, for that price you can get a lot better stuff. But I guess since it's Steam people are magically willing to pay a premium, just like they do on games there.

Orca, I wish you'd stop pointing out that you got the beta to test. I'm getting serious beta envy.

Aw.. Well if it's any consolidation, judging from the state of the software I think it won't be too long before they release it.

It really isn't. I'm still dragging my heavy thermaltake lan box to our weekly game on saturday.

I'm actually getting an Ouya here in a couple weeks. That would be fantastic if we could run it on the Ouya.

Just a note, the Ouya is supposed to be completely open. Therefore, it shouldn't be too difficult to load the APK onto the system. The trouble comes primarily with controls. I understand that a keyboard mouse set up will work natively on the Ouya, but my understanding is that it's still a bit wonky. I'm supposed to be in the initial group of Ouya recievers (kickstarter supporter) so hopefully I can speak with more authority on the matter in a couple of weeks.

Why complain about taking a computer to a LAN? That's what LANs are about, enjoying your rig.

I live on the third floor and often get home after midnight. If I didn't have to make a trip for my shuttle and another for my monitor I'd be fine but two trips is a thing when you're already tired.

Who needs sleep?

And backpacks/dufflebags are wonderful inventions

I have a dufflebag. It's why I even bother moving my computer down the stairs.

Or just download the android app to your current phone, it works just fine I've been using it all day:
http://briananim.kicks-ass.net:9000/ftp/droidapps/ArtimusClient-2.7.2b.apk download that to your phone, then run it to install the app.

That's certainly true Brian, but the Ouya presents the possibility of hooking up controllers and possibly even joysticks (not 100% clear on the joysticks) for helm control as well as a quick and easy way to output to the TV.

Exactly. Playing on an android phone is great but it lacks the nice screen and my hands have trouble working the displays.

Or just plug a mouse into the phone, they accept Bluetooth or USB mice natively, you may need to buy an adapter for USB mice. Also any decent android phone can output to HDMI. I use a docking station when I'm at my desk at home with my note 2, gives me 3 USB ports, and HDMI out which goes up on my top monitor/tv.

Or if this isn't an option you could always just buy a Toshiba thrive, they sell for like $150 on amazon, they have a tegra 2 processor which is more than enough to run this game (I used to have one until I bought my note II)
The Toshiba thrive has a USB port for mouse or keyboard, and a full sized HDMI output port for hooking into a tv or monitor.
