Turn your Cell Phone into a Tricorder...

posted Jul 06, 2013 00:22:30 by erickrarick
I've compiled a list of Apps for Android that I think do a good job of turning a cellphone into a basic tricorder. Perhaps someone can do the same for iOS (I'm guessing many of these Apps have iOS counterparts anyway).

The goal of this list is to provide a toolkit of apps that make use of a phone's sensors (mic, camera, gyroscope, etc) to record and manipulate data without external resources such as the internet or GPS. The idea is that, if you had this device on an alien planet.. it would still function.

Basic Data:
(These apps simply record data)

Audio Spectral View
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=radonsoft.net.spectralview

EMF Detector
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.sira.metal

Accelerometer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lul.accelerometer

Light Meter
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.fmbee.beecam.lightmeter

Barometer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sy.android.sypressure
(My phone doesn't have a barometric sensor, but it is still good to include one on the list)

Interpret Data:

Flight HUD
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funtrigger.flighthud
(some features require GPS, but not all)

Heart Rate / Breathing
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitrox.facion.gui
(This is probably my favorite one...)

Compute Data:

Graphing Calculator
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herbertlaw

Unit Converter:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wopnersoft.unitconverter

All-in-Ones:

Scientific Sci-fi Scanner Lite
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danms.LCARSScanner
(LCARS style! Uses some Internet/GPS features but very cool for Role Playing. Also need to pay for all features)

AndroSensor
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fivasim.androsensor
(Another all-in-one, but again, uses some GPS/Internet features)

Android Sensor Box
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox
(This is a good all in one suite - but I'm not a big fan of its style.)

Other:

My Android Sensors
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bytehangar.MyAndroidSensors
(Useful if you're not sure what sensors your phone has - a good 'self diagnostic app', if you will)

If you have others to suggest, please feel free... just keep in mind:

* Should not use Internet or GPS
* Hopefully free
